More facts about America Online:
Well known now as an Internet pioneer, America Online started in 1989 as an online bulletin board service. Over the years AOL became the industry leader by acquisitions of rival competitors and using tactics that caused controversy for the company. While seen as innovative, AOL’s use of requiring customers to install their Internet browsing software brought about complaints from many who believed the software actually caused technical problems with their computers. In 2000, AOL was served with an $8 billion lawsuit regarding this matter and ended up settling for $15 million. Another controversy over their cancellation policy’s resulted in a lawsuit if $1.25 million in 2005 paid to the State of New York. Currently America Online is in the midst of reinventing itself as a media portal and no longer promotes itself as an Internet service provider.
